IRAP (Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein) is also available at Abraham’s Equine Clinic for the treatment of arthritis. It is unique in that it actually has the potential for long-term treatment and prevention of arthritis by stopping the inflammatory cycle and greatly reducing the degradation process trying to occur in the joint. IRAP is derived from your horse’s own blood and injected into your horse’s arthritic joint. Horses most likely to benefit from IRAP therapy are those that have mild arthritis or synovitis. It is important to note that IRAP does not reverse permanent damage that has already occurred in the joint, but it does help to reduce inflammation, slow the progression of damage and reduce pain and lameness. For more information on IRAP, see our article in the Client Education section of our website.
